Operation Recognition

High School Diplomas for NJ WWII,

KOREAN & VIETNAM Veterans

The West Milford Township Board of Education is proud to announce its recognition of and support for  AOperation Recognition,@ a program that offers high school diplomas for veterans who left high school to join the military.

In a ceremony on October 5, 2000, the New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMAVA) jointly launched a program to honor World War II era veterans who left school to join the military and never received a high school diploma.  Known as Operation Recognition, the program will award a state-endorsed high school diploma to any New Jersey veteran who left a New Jersey high school to enter military service during World War II.  This program has been extended to cover veterans of the Korean and Vietnam era as well.

AThis is a small recognition we can give in appreciation to those who sacrificed their education to ensure our freedoms,@ said Michael Warner, Deputy Commissioner for Veteran Affairs, DMAVA.

AWorld War II was the defining event in the lives of so many of our current senior citizens.  Many of the soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines of that time sacrificed so much to defend our great country,@ said Commissioner of Education, William L. Librera.  AI am proud to lend my personal support and pledge the full cooperation and commitment of the Department of Education to acknowledge with pride and reverence the opportunities they lost in order to keep our country free.@

Programs similar to Operation Recognition have been established in other states, including  Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Massachusetts, Nebraska, North Carolina, and West Virginia.
