Colonial Life Trades

Social Studies                                                                    Grade 5

Lesson Summary:

Students will research and report on a colonial life trade.

Objectives:

¨     Students will research and report on a colonial life trade (see attached list)

¨     Students will create a PowerPoint slide presentation with a corresponding picture to present to the class.

Materials:

Dictionaries

Encyclopedias

Computer:  Encarta, Internet, Scanner, Scan-It., PowerPoint

Nonfiction books on colonial crafts/trades

Procedures:

1.      Students will be given a list of colonial life trades (see attached).  Each student will choose a trade he/she would like to learn about.

2.    Students will be responsible for finding 5 or more interesting facts for their multimedia presentation.

3.    Students will use the computer and other resources to research their trade – a list of appropriate web sites will be distributed.

4.    Students will create their PowerPoint presentation using information they gathered, as well as a picture they chose.  The intent of this project is to teach the rest of the class about the trade.

5.    Individuals will present their report to the class using a Scan-It (large screen display).
