Crossword Puzzle

 

Social Studies/Reading/Research                                              Grades 4, 5, 6

 

Lesson Summary:

Students will set up a crossword puzzle using information gathered from research.

 

Objectives:

§        Use the computer to research a given topic (Women’s History, Authors, States, etc.)

§        Write specific clues to be used in a crossword puzzle

 

Materials:

Encarta or other multimedia encyclopedia

Internet

 

Procedures:

1.      Students will work either alone or in pairs.  They will be assigned a topic to research based on what they are studying in their class.

 

2.    Students will use Encarta and the Internet to research their topic.  They will write ten to twelve clues from facts gathered from research.  The facts:

·        should be specific

·        shouldn’t include part of the answer

 

3.    It would be a good idea for the class to work on answering a class crossword puzzle before assigning and make note of how clues are written.

 

4.    Students will use one of the following web sites to set up their crossword puzzles:  http://www.peak.org/cornvalley/crossword

5.    Printed copies could be exchanged or used at stations.
