OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL:
COLLEGE ENTRANCE EXAMS: - Required by most 4 year colleges

PSAT(Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test) a 2 ½ hour standardized test given once a year on a Saturday in October, generally taken by 10 and/or 11th graders interested in going to college. While it has no direct influence on admissions, it is a reasonably good predictor of SAT I scores and is helpful in consideration of potential college choices. This is used for qualification for National Merit and other scholarship programs. The PSAT is also regarded as a learning experience since the student receives the test book and answer key back. Registration is through the Guidance Office

SAT I (Scholastic Assessment Test - Reasoning Test) usually taken in spring of junior year and fall of senior year, this 3 hour standardized test is used by most colleges in the admissions process. Registration is by mail directly or On-Line (preferered at www.collegeboard.com ) to the Educational Testing Service (ETS) 4 to 6 weeks prior to the test date. Registration materials are available in the Guidance Office. We do not recommend that freshmen and sophomores take this test. Time and money are better spent on practice tests and other preparatory tools.

SAT II (Scholastic Assessment Test - Subject Tests) required by some colleges & used by most of these colleges for admissions and others for placement in courses, these tests are subject oriented, e.g., physics, biology, French, United States History. Registration information is the same as for the SAT I.

ACT - similar to the SAT I, most colleges now will accept either/or. Registration information is available in the Guidance Office. Some students do better on this test since it is more curriculum-based. Registration is by mail or On-Line (preferred) at www.actstudies.org .
