Criteria for Placement into Grade 8 Honors/Enriched Courses

Any student who hopes to be placed in a Grade 8 Honors or Enriched course, or a full year foreign language course, must meet the criteria for that course as shown below. 

For placement into Enriched Language & Literature

1.   AA@ average in Grade 7  Language & Literature

2.  Total Language score of  95^th percentile or higher on Gr. 7 Terranova Test

3.  AEnriched@ recommendation by Gr. 7  Language & Literature teacher

4.  Score of  A8" or better on the honors writing sample test

For placement into Honors Algebra:

1.  AA@ average in Grade 7 Math (preferably in the Above Grade class )

2. Recommendation for Algebra by Grade 7 Math teacher

3. Total Math score of 85^th percentile or higher on Gr. 7 Terranova Test

4. Total Reading score of 85^th percentile or higher on Gr. 7 Terranova Test

5. Score of 85 or higher on the Algebra Prognosis Test

For placement into Honors Science:***

 1.  AA@ average in Grade 7 Science

 2.  AB+@ average in Grade 7 Math

 3.  Honors recommendation by Grade 7 Science teacher

4. A passing score on the Honors Science assessment test

5. High scores on the Reading section of the Terranova Test

6. High scores on the Mathematics section of the Terranova Test

For placement into Full Year Foreign Language:

1. Total Language or Total Reading score in the 70^th percentile or higher

on the Grade 7 Terranova test.

 2.  AB@ average or better in Grade 7 Language & Literature.

***Note:  It is strongly recommended that all students taking Honors Science also be enrolled in Honors Algebra in Grade 8.  Otherwise, if the student continues into Honors Biology in Grade 9, and has not taken Algebra in Grade 8, he/she will be required to take Honors Chemistry, Geometry and Algebra 2 Honors and the C++ programming course during his/her lunch period, in Grade 10.
