"SKIPPP"
is an authentic learning project designed to bring students and older adults
together in hands-on, active learning experiences which incorporate the
NJCCC Standards. Integrating family histories into the social studies
curriculum and linking the generations is a win-win opportunity for young
and old.
"SKIPPP"
students predict how they will look at age 70, develop a list of questions,
interview family members and older adult members of the community, and
record oral histories. Photographs and artifacts are examined and stories
are shared. Students practice steps in the writing process to organize
information and write accounts of older adults based on photographs and
memories shared. Letters, cards, phone calls, and emails are exchanged
throughout the year. SKIPPP students meet frequently during the school year
and enjoy fun, food, and friendship with older adult buddies.
Under the
direction and guidance of Library Media Specialists, Margaret Mack and Peggy
Koharian, Fourth Grade students at Maple Road School and Mrs. Morris' Class
at Apshawa School participated in "SKIPPP" linking learning with
intergenerational activities and literature. "SKIPPP"
was awarded an NFIE grant in 2002 from the NEA Foundation. We
were very excited
and proud to receive this award!
