SECTION: BUSINESS AND NON-INSTRUCTIONAL OPERATIONS
OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE OF PLANT
The West Milford Board of Education is responsible for providing school buildings that are safe, sanitary, properly equipped, lighted and ventilated, and aesthetically suited to promoting the goals of the West Milford School District's buildings, and site accommodations shall include provisions for the handicapped pursuant to law and regulations.
A. Safety of pupils and employees and economical operation require effective maintenance of the school's physical facilities. The maintenance staff is charged with the responsibility of caring for and protecting these facilities. The maintenance staff shall receive the cooperation of the pupils, the teachers and the principal.
B. The principal of each school in cooperation with the supervisor of building and grounds shall:
1. be responsible for the care and maintenance of the buildings and grounds.
2. supervise the custodial staff of the school in maintaining an adequate program for such care and maintenance.
C. Principals shall regularly inspect all buildings, equipment, playgrounds and playground apparatus for conditions which might be dangerous to health, safety and comfort of the pupils or personnel.
D. Teachers shall be responsible for the safe use of buildings, grounds and equipment in the classes which they teach or in the activities for which they are responsible.
E. Employees shall report promptly to the principal of the school or department chairman any defects in building, furniture, playground apparatus or other equipment that might prove injurious to the comfort, health, safety of teachers, pupils or other persons.
F. The Superintendent of Schools and Board Secretary shall develop a multi-year comprehensive maintenance plan for Board approval, to be updated annually.
