SCHOOL ADMISSIONS

Students wishing to register in the West Milford Township Public Schools shall comply with the admission policy of the West Milford Board of Education as follows: 

A.            Kindergarten:  Any child residing in the school district shall be admitted to kindergarten provided: 

1.         Valid documentation certifying residency in the Township of West Milford.  Valid documentation shall include, but not be limited to, a deed, mortgage statement, tax bill, or rental lease; in addition, two of the following shall be required: telephone bill, electric bill, cable television bill, gas bill, valid driver=s license, or bank statement. 

2.         The student will attain the age of five (5) years on or before October 1 of that school year. 

3.         The following records have been presented by a parent or legal guardian: 

a.            Birth Certificate. 

b.            Proof of up-to-date records for:  diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, polio, measles, mumps, rubella immunizations, and tuberculin testing.  Such records shall be presented at the time of enrollment or within 30 days from the date of entry into school. 

c.            Results of a recent physical examination within six (6) months prior to the date of entry into school. 

B.         Grade One:  Any child residing in the school district shall be admitted to Grade One provided: 

1.         Valid documentation certifying residency in the Township of West Milford. 

Valid documentation shall include, but not be limited to, a deed, mortgage statement, tax bill, or rental lease; in addition, two of the following shall be required: telephone bill, electric bill, cable television bill, gas bill, valid driver=s license, or bank statement. 

2.         The student will attain the age of six (6) years on or before October 1 of that school year; or 

The student has proof of transfer from a first grade of another public or private school; or 

The student has proof of completion of a kindergarten program in a public or private school and has been recommended for placement in the first grade; and 

3.         Proof of up-to-date immunization records against communicable diseases and appropriate tuberculin testing. 

C.            Transfer Students:  Students transferring into the school district are expected to present copies of records from the previously attended school to aid in placement.  Transfer records shall include: 

1.         Valid documentation certifying residency in the Township of West Milford. 

Valid documentation shall include, but not be limited to, a deed, mortgage statement, tax bill, or rental lease; in addition, two of the following shall be required: telephone bill, electric bill, cable television bill, gas bill, valid driver=s license, or bank statement. 

2.         Proof of identity and age. 

3.         Proof of immunizations and a valid record of appropriate tuberculin testing.  The tuberculin test will only be considered valid if it was administered within the previous six (6) months from date of entry. 

4.         Other pupil records requested in writing from the school of previous attendance in accordance with procedures prescribed by law. 

Initial placement shall be made on the basis of the records, but adjustment may be made at the discretion of the administration when assessment indicates that such adjustments would be beneficial to the child. 

Affidavit Pupils 

When there is any doubt as to whether a child is entitled to free public education in the district schools, all procedures of the law shall be followed. 

Nonresidents 

The district is obliged to educate children of appropriate age residing in the district.  The mere owning of any property whatsoever does not qualify a parent/guardian to send children to school in this district. 

Verification 

The West Milford Board of Education reserves the right to verify the residency of any pupil and the validity of any affidavit of guardianship. 

Homeless Pupils 

The district will determine the educational placement of homeless students in each child=s best interest and respond to appeals concerning them made by parents/guardians or other parties in accordance with New Jersey statutes and administrative code.  The cost of tuition shall be born by the district of residence as mandated by statute. 

Waiver of Admission Requirements: 

Action by the West Milford Board of Education shall be required for student admission to the school district without meeting the requirements of this policy.
