SECTION: INSTRUCTION
BASIC SKILLS
The Board directs development of strong basic skills courses at all levels of the schools. Each pupil shall have one full period per day in the reading, writing and/or mathematics skills appropriate to his/her grade and achievement level until all have satisfied the basic skills requirement for high school graduation. The district's basic skills improvement plan shall be communicated to the public in accordance with law.
The Superintendent shall work with the staff to:
1. Develop articulated courses in basic skills for all grade levels;
2. Actively seek innovative and remedial programs to ensure that all district pupils acquire the basic skills suited to their grade level and capacity.
All elementary pupils will be tested annually for achievement level in basic skills. Each pupil identified as having the need for preventive and/or remedial instruction shall participate in a program designed to meet his/her identified needs. Parents/guardians shall be strongly encouraged to participate in the design of remedial programs for their child.
A child shall participate in a remedial education program so long as he/she does not meet minimum proficiency levels in basic reading, writing and/or mathematics skills.
