ATHLETICS/EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

The following administrative procedures shall be applied toward the implementation of the West Milford Board of Education policy on Student Eligibility (Policy 6145):

1. To be eligible for athletic competition during the fall and winter seasons (September 1 to January 31) a 10th, 11th, or 12th grade student must have passed 27.5 credits during the immediately preceding academic year. To be eligible for athletic competition during the spring season (February 1 to June 30) a 9th, 10, 11th, or 12th grade student must have passed 13.75 credits at the close of the preceding semester (1st and 2nd marking periods - January 31). This is the regulation of the N.J.S.I.A.A., and there is no local appeal to this policy.

2. In addition to the N.J.S.I.A.A. regulation above, however, the West Milford Board of Education requires that a student must achieve at least a 2.0 Grade Point Average for the following seasons:

a. Eligibility for the fall season is based on the previous year's GPA, with the exception that all freshmen are declared eligible.

b. Eligibility for the winter season is based on the first marking period GPA.

c. Eligibility for the spring season is based on the first and second marking period averaged grades.

3. Students falling below a 2.0 Grade Point Average will be placed on academic probation and permitted to participate in the interscholastic athletic and/or extracurricular program if they do the following:

a. The student and/or parents or guardians must meet with the principal and request an appeal.

b. The student's parents or guardians must support the appeal and must agree to closely monitor his/her study and homework habits.

c. The student will be required to attend a tutorial program Monday through Thursday from 2:00 p.m. - 2:45 p.m. during the season he/she is participating in a sport or activity.

4. If a student achieves a 2.0 average or greater at the following check points: Fall - mid-marking period; Winter - end of second marking period; Spring - end of third marking period, the principal will determine if the student should be required to continue the tutorial program. If the student does not achieve a 2.0, the principal, based on the student's effort and improvement, will determine whether he/she will be permitted to remain in the activity and/or be required to remain in the tutorial program.

5. Tutorial Program Procedures:

a. Students would be excused from the program for any away contests. Students also may be excused from a tutoring session to meet with another teacher for extra help. The session must be for at least 45 minutes.

b. If a student has one unexcused absence from a tutoring session, he/she will be warned. If that student cuts a second session, he/she will meet with his/her head coach and the athletic director. A third cut will result in dismissal from the program.

c. Students have the option to remain with the program to work toward a higher GPA even if they obtain a 2.0 GPA.

d. The tutorial program will be available to all students who require assistance, not limited to just those participating in the sports or extracurricular program.
