SECTION: BYLAWS OF THE BOARD

BOARD MEMBER DEVELOPMENT

A. Orientation of New Board Members

The Superintendent of Schools shall prepare materials to introduce new Board members to the operating procedures of the district and the details of the curriculum, including special education.

Sufficient moneys shall be allocated to reimburse Board members for expenses incurred by them in attending orientation sessions presented by the New Jersey School Boards Association, and/or the county office or other arm of the State Department of Education.

B. In-Service Development

Workshops, conventions, conferences, and seminars developed by associations such as the New Jersey School Boards Association, the Passaic County School Boards Association, the New Jersey Association of School Administrators, etc., provide unique opportunities for Board members to broaden their understanding of their responsibilities, learn new tools and techniques for dealing with them, and keep up to date on educational trends.

Therefore, attendance at such meetings directly or indirectly related to education or school matters shall be encouraged for the values they have to the school system and the professional growth of Board members. The Board shall evaluate prospective development opportunities prior to each school year and shall monitor attendance to insure that it is consistent with the perceived value of the events.

Any Board member wishing to attend any such meeting shall obtain the prior approval of the full Board for any prepaid, reimbursable or other expenses. The Board Secretary shall maintain a record of all such expenses and prepare quarterly reports reflecting the total amount spent to date and the amount remaining in the budget for such activities.

Board members attending such meetings shall share their experience with the full Board in discussion and/or written report.

Approved expenses shall be reimbursed under procedures applicable to in-service development meetings.
