Guidance Department

  • Welcome to the West Milford Department of
    Guidance & School Counseling

The West Milford Guidance & Counseling Department consists of two units- one at West Milford High School and one at Macopin Middle School.

    PHILOSOPHY OF GUIDANCE
We believe the function of a school counselor is to assist the student in obtaining maximum benefit from his/her high school experience.

This very broad statement implies guidance activities that touch every phase of the student’s development.

We believe that, as school counselors, our task is to aid the student in making decisions and choices that will result in the widest range of post-secondary options.

We believe in the right of the student for self-determination and, in turn, in his/her obligation to accept responsibility for the consequences of his/her decisions. We also feel an obligation to influence these decisions in light of our training and experience by presenting the possible choices and consequences of each choice unbiased to the student.

In that part of the program that is planned, we feel we should concern ourselves chiefly with the choice of a school program, adjustment to course requirements, adjustment to school society, and the choice of post-secondary school experiences, both educational and/or vocational.

The WM Guidance program is based on both the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) model as well as the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) model for secondary school counselors.

The professional school counselor is a certified/licensed educator trained in school counseling with unique qualifications and skills to address all students’ academic, personal/social and career development needs. Professional school counselors implement a comprehensive school counseling program that promotes and enhances student achievement.  Professional school counselors serve a vital role in maximizing student achievement. Incorporating leadership, advocacy and collaboration, professional school counselors promote equity and access to opportunities and rigorous educational experiences for all students. Professional school counselors support a safe learning environment and work to safeguard the human rights of all members of the school community.
