Highlander Academy offers a dynamic, student-centered academic program designed to meet each learner where they are while helping them grow with confidence. Our program is IEP-driven, ensuring that every student receives individualized instruction aligned with their unique goals, strengths, and needs.

Students participate in a departmentalized schedule, moving between classes for each subject just like in traditional middle and high schools. Courses are aligned with New Jersey state standards and graduation requirements, and are offered at grade-level expectations while allowing for meaningful differentiation and support.

Our highly qualified special education teachers specialize in their content areas and work alongside instructional aides to provide small class sizes, targeted support, and personalized instruction. Lessons are thoughtfully adapted to meet a wide range of learning styles, incorporating hands-on learning, flexible seating environments, and 1 to 1 technology, with every student having access to a Chromebook. We also offer credit recovery and expanded electives through platforms such as Acellus, ensuring students stay on track toward graduation while exploring their interests.

Beyond the classroom, students benefit from a full-school experience, including a regulation size gym, on-site cafeteria, and nursing services. Students may also access mainstreaming opportunities at West Milford High School and Macopin Middle School when appropriate, expanding their access to additional courses and electives and allowing them to further customize their individual learning paths.

At Highlander Academy, no two students follow the exact same path. Our program is built around:

• Customized curricula based on individual interests and educational needs
• Differentiated instruction for all learning levels and styles
• Opportunities for student voice in shaping their learning experiences
• A wide range of electives that evolve each year based on student interests
• Academic and transition focused programming to support life beyond school
