Highlander Academy’s Wellness-Based Approach
Highlander Academy embraces a comprehensive approach that places equal importance on emotional well-being, behavioral growth, and academic success. We recognize that students are best able to learn when they feel safe, supported, connected, and understood. For this reason, intensive therapeutic and behavioral supports are integrated throughout the school day rather than separated from the educational experience. This creates a cohesive environment in which students can develop the skills they need to manage challenges while continuing to learn and grow.
Throughout the school day, students are provided with opportunities to understand their emotions, recognize triggers, and develop strategies for managing stress and challenging behaviors. Our multidisciplinary team—including school social workers, counselors, therapists, child study team members, and teachers—works collaboratively to provide individualized support. Through counseling, behavioral planning, crisis intervention, progress monitoring, and consistent, research-informed strategies, students build coping skills, emotional awareness, self-regulation, and positive decision-making skills. By helping students first become regulated and ready to engage, we create greater opportunities for meaningful participation in learning and success.
Central to this vision is the Academy’s Whole Student Wellness Initiative, which incorporates physical activity, mindfulness, nutrition education, personal care, and other wellness practices into students’ daily experiences. By emphasizing skill-building and healthy habit formation, the initiative helps students develop practical strategies for managing stress, regulating their emotions and nervous systems, and supporting their overall well-being. Staff also create predictable routines and opportunities for movement, reflection, and connection, helping students build self-awareness, resilience, and confidence over time.
These principles come to life through intentional programs, structures, and experiences throughout the school day:
Community Building and Connection:
Each morning, students and staff come together as a community, creating opportunities to build relationships, establish belonging, and begin the day with purpose. Dedicated team-building activities, school events, and shared experiences throughout the year further strengthen relationships and contribute to a positive school culture.
Wellness and Fitness Room:
Our wellness space provides opportunities for movement, mindfulness, and stress-reducing activities. Students can use the space to support physical health, practice healthy coping strategies, and develop lifelong wellness habits.
Calming Room:
Our dedicated calming room provides a quiet, low-sensory environment where students can step away from the demands of the school day, reflect, and regain a sense of control. The goal is to help students return to the learning environment feeling more focused and prepared to participate.
Pet Therapy and Engagement Opportunities:
Throughout the year, students have opportunities to interact with therapy animals. These experiences can provide comfort, reduce stress, encourage connection, and create meaningful opportunities for engagement.
Coping Skills and Wellness Instruction:
Students receive direct instruction in emotional regulation, stress management, nutrition, physical fitness, mental health awareness, and other wellness-focused topics. Grounded in an understanding of the connections among the brain, body, thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, this instruction helps students develop greater self-awareness and practical skills they can apply in school and beyond. These concepts are reinforced through counseling services, curriculum, school-wide activities, field trips, assemblies, and everyday interactions.
Incentive Room:
The incentive room provides a structured and engaging space where students can earn access to activities such as gaming, foosball, basketball, music, and other preferred activities. The room reinforces positive choices while providing opportunities for social interaction, connection, and success.
Together, these efforts create an environment where students are supported not only in managing immediate challenges, but in developing the confidence, self-regulation, resilience, and life skills needed for long-term success. At Highlander Academy, we go beyond academics to help students grow, resent, reconnect and develop the skills to navigate life’s challenges.
