Department of Family &Consumer Sciences

Family & Consumer Sciences offers a variety of elective courses that prepare students with practical life skills for college, careers, and everyday living. Courses focus on areas such as nutrition and wellness, child development, culinary skills, home design, and career exploration. Through hands-on learning and real-world applications, students build independence, responsibility, and decision-making skills that support success beyond high school.

Culinary Arts 1

Learn basic culinary skills through hands-on experience in food preparation. Students are exposed to a variety of topics in food preparation, to provide them with nutrition education needed to make wise food choices and to introduce the work standards found in the foodservice industry.

World Cuisines

This course focuses on the cultural aspects of food.  Students “travel” the United States and the world studying food customs of immigrant and indigenous populations. Preparations include historic recipes as well as more modern ones.

Requirements: Teacher Recommendation & Completion of Culinary Arts.

Tomorrow's Teachers: Internship

Tomorrow’s Teachers is a rigorous, honors-weighted elective offered to students in the twelfth grade. The primary objective of this internship is to prepare students for careers in early childhood education, elementary education, and child-related fields.  The on-site preschool will provide the environment for students to apply this knowledge and develop skills in working with, teaching, and caring for preschool and young school-age children.  Additionally, students will gain an understanding of what is involved in becoming a teacher and determine what role they play in fostering progress in education as a teacher, parent, and/or civic leader. 

Requirements: Teacher Recommendation & Successful Completion of Child Development with no less than an A.

Child Development

This course is designed to help students understand how to work with and care for children as they grow. It explains how children change as they grow physically, intellectually, socially, emotionally, and morally. Each stage of development is explored from prenatal through school age, with an eye to the special needs and concerns of children with developmental differences. Caring for children through play activities, keeping children healthy and safe, and child care career exploration are all important components of this course.

Food, Nutrition and You

This course is designed to inform, challenge, and guide the eating patterns of the student in a healthy format.  The course will provide the opportunity to study nutrition, fitness, weight management, eating disorders, the relationship between nutrition and exercise, and how all this can optimize athletic performance.  This class includes a balance of class work, demonstrations, and hands-on experiences.

Interior Design

This course is a project based course that teaches students to use design elements to make living space reflect lifestyles and personal preferences. Elements to be studied include color and lighting, furniture style and selection, historical relevance of design choice, room arrangement, floor and wall covering, and window treatment.
